Annuity talk always forgets how long the payments run

Discussion · Robin ·

People say take the annuity like it is one simple monthly check. The actual schedule and increasing payments matter, and Powerball and Mega Millions rules should be checked before anybody repeats a number. What part of the annuity choice do casual conversations usually miss?

For a US Powerball jackpot, the annuity is 30 payments over 29 years: one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, each 5% larger than the previous one. Mega Millions also uses a 30-payment graduated annuity with payments that rise 5% each year. Both games also publish a one-time cash option for US winners.

The advertised jackpot is the total of the annuity payments before tax; it is not 30 equal cheques and it is not the cash amount. The better personal choice depends on age, estate plan, tax position, risk and spending needs, so a real winner should decide only after independent legal, tax and investment advice.
