If a friend in the US buys the ticket, whose ticket is it?

Question · Karan ·

People say just ask a friend to buy, like ownership is automatic. The friend has the original ticket and the state rules may care who signs or claims it. Before sending any money, what should both people understand?

The friend physically holding the original ticket has the practical control, and a private message saying it is yours may not settle ownership. The selling jurisdiction can have its own rules on signing, gifting, groups, agents and claims. Powerball also requires the prize to be claimed where the ticket was purchased.

Do not treat a casual transfer as automatic. Before money changes hands, check the issuing lottery's rules and put the arrangement in writing; for a large prize, both people need legal and tax advice. A configured LotteryCorner affiliate service has published partner terms, but it still must be reviewed separately and should not be described as an official lottery sale.
