US jackpot headlines and UK Lotto headlines are hard to compare

Discussion · Jamie ·

The US headline may be a long annuity before tax, while a UK jackpot is presented differently. Putting the two numbers side by side feels impressive but not very honest. What details should a fair comparison show?

The comparison became even more important after UK Powerball sales began on 21 July 2026. A US play costs $2 and a UK play costs £4. They share the same jackpot and jackpot odds, but lower-tier prizes are funded and administered separately.

The US headline is a pre-tax dollar annuity and a US winner can choose the cash value. The UK headline is shown in pounds post-tax using the highest applicable UK tax rate, and a UK jackpot winner receives payments over 30 years without the US cash option. A fair table must show those differences before putting the two headline figures side by side.
