What to Do First If You Win the Lottery
The first few days matter more than the first few purchases. Protect the ticket, then slow down.

If you think you have won a big lottery prize, the most important thing is the ticket itself. Sign the back, put it somewhere safe, and do not let anyone else hold it. Almost everything else can wait a few days.
1. Secure the ticket
A lottery ticket is a bearer instrument: whoever holds it can try to claim it. Signing it makes it clear the ticket is yours. Take a photo of the front and back for your own records, and keep that photo private.
2. Check the deadline, but do not rush
Every lottery sets a claim period, and it varies by state. Florida, for example, gives 180 days from the drawing date for draw games. If you want the cash option on a Florida Lotto or Powerball jackpot, you must claim within 60 days. Look up your state's rules before you plan anything else.
3. Understand the tax withholding
Large prizes are taxed. Lotteries withhold federal income tax from prizes over $5,000, generally 24% when you provide a Social Security number. That withholding is not always the final bill, especially on a large prize, so talk to a tax professional before you claim.
4. Decide between cash and annuity
Jackpot winners usually choose between a one-time cash payment and an annuity paid over many years. The annuity adds up to the advertised amount; the cash option is smaller. There is no universally right answer, which is why advice from a financial professional who is not trying to sell you something is worth getting first.
5. Find out what becomes public
Whether your name is released depends on the state. Some publish winners' names, and some allow a period of confidentiality. In Florida, the name of a winner of $250,000 or more is exempt from public disclosure for 90 days from the claim date. Check your state's rule before you claim if privacy matters to you.
6. Keep it quiet for now
Tell as few people as possible until you have claimed and have a plan. That is not about secrecy for its own sake. It simply gives you room to make decisions without pressure.
