The Illinois Lottery officially launched on July 1, 1974, and quickly became a favorite across the state. In its very first year, it generated an impressive $129 million in sales. Though enthusiasm dipped over time, the lottery regained momentum in 1980 with the introduction of its first terminal game, Pick 3, which boosted sales to $164 million and reignited public interest.
Today, the Illinois Lottery offers a wide variety of games including Pick 3, Pick 4, Lucky Day Lotto, Lotto, Powerball, and Mega Millions, providing players with exciting opportunities every day.
The lottery drawings are conducted under the supervision of an independent auditor to ensure integrity. In a unique move, Illinois became the only single–jurisdiction lottery to broadcast its drawings nationwide through WGN America. These broadcasts brought Illinois games into homes across the U.S. and even into parts of Canada. Although WGN America shifted its programming in 2014 and discontinued the broadcasts, the Illinois Lottery continues to maintain strict transparency in its operations.
How Illinois Lottery Funds Are Used
The money raised by the Illinois Lottery supports several important causes:
- Education Funding: Since 1985, lottery profits have gone to the Common School Fund, providing essential financial support to K–12 public schools. Over the years, the Illinois Lottery has contributed more than $24 billion to education.
- Specialty Instant Games: Introduced in 2006, specialty tickets help fund causes like Special Olympics, multiple sclerosis research, HIV/AIDS support, veterans' assistance, breast cancer research, homelessness prevention, and Alzheimer's support.
- Capital Projects Fund: Between 2010 and 2022, part of the lottery proceeds also supported infrastructure projects, such as building and repairing state roads and bridges.
The Illinois Lottery is currently managed by the Department of Lottery under the leadership of Director Harold Mays , operating out of offices across Chicago, Springfield, Des Plaines, Rockford, and Fairview Heights.
