About Virginia (VA) Lottery

When measured with other lotteries of the United States of America, the Virginia Lottery, or VA lottery as we commonly know it these days, is fairly new to the scene. Launched on September 20, 1988, it managed to make a name for itself for a number of reasons, despite having a poor start.

The Virginia Lottery is also quite well-known for being one of the principal states which began offering the Mega Millions lottery game, which was at the time referred to as “The Big Game”. And the best part is that this happened just eight years after the launch of the lottery, in the end of August, 1996.

FUNDING

Another thing the VA lottery is quite famous for is funding the entire state’s young resident’s educational funds. Even on their website, they have claimed that they are “game for education.”

For 20 years, every single benefit and profit earned by the Virginia lottery has been utilized for the educational expenses of all the youngsters in the Commonwealth. Most of the time, these profits and benefits go to everyone – this means that from kindergarten kids to the youth in the 12th grade, everyone in the Commonwealth is well taken care of.

Even in 2018, which was a Fiscal Year, this young but remarkable institution of lottery games managed to have sales of literally more than $2.1 billion. From this great amount of money, the VA lottery managed to raise over $606 million. This means that around 28.3% went to the public educational funds for students from Kindergarten to Intermediate. Around 61.1% of money ended up going to the players who had won the prizes. Around 5.7% ended up going to the people who had been selling the tickets of Virginia lottery, and the remaining 4.9% ended up taking care of administration costs.

ABOUT THE DRAW GAMES

Alongside VA Lotto, the following games are offered:

In Mega Millions, VA lottery results can help you win jackpots which start from $40 million. And your odds of winning $1,000,000 are so much higher now.

Powerball is quite similar to Mega Millions, but is actually an older and much more legendary game. Players can win jackpots starting from $40 million and so much more.

CASH4LIFE is a lottery game which is not available in a lot of lotteries in the United States. It is the first game in Virginia which guarantees lifetime prizes. All players get a chance to win $1000 every day for the rest of their lives.

Just like the name suggests, in Bank a Million, all players get the opportunity to win up to $1,000,000, and the lottery has to pay all the taxes! VA Lottery winning numbers for this game have literally changed so many lives.

In Cash 5 – the classic lotto game – the players can win a jackpot of $100,000.

In Pick 3 and Pick 4, players can pick 3 or 4 digits, and win prizes of more than $5000.

Raffle is a lottery game in which gives you a chance to win up to $1,000,000!

Moving forward, these are the options you have to claim the lottery prize in Virginia

In-Person Claim
  • Prizes of $600 or less:

Virginia Lottery retailers may cash prizes worth up to $600.

Remember that many stores don't keep a lot of cash on hand due to security concerns.

However, retailers may still use a check or money order to pay you. If you'd rather, you can submit it to a Virginia Lottery customer service location, or one of the prize locations.

For your winnings, we'll be happy to send you a check or a Visa debit card. The only distinction is that if the prize is worth more than $100, you'll also need to provide a legitimate government-issued photo ID and your Social Security number.

  • Prize over $600:

You can take your ticket to a Virginia Lottery customer service location or one of the prize zones if it is worth more than $600.

The addresses and phone numbers are listed below. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID as well as your Social Security card or another form of identification that shows you have a Social Security number.

To make sure your name is exactly the same on both your photo ID and Social Security card, check them both twice. You must have an exact match for you to be able to claim your winnings.

Mail-in Claim
  • To claim by mail. Sign your ticket and mail to the address below.

  • Ensure to complete the necessary information at the back of your ticket so the Lottery can know where to send the check or Visa Debit card.

Are Virginia lottery winnings going to be taxed?
Yes. Income taxes apply to all lottery prizes in Virginia. For every prize above $5,000, the Lottery is required to deduct federal and state taxes. Federal taxes are deducted at a rate of 24% and state taxes at a rate of 6.5% by the lottery. Federal backup withholding may apply to prizes given to non-US citizens.
What happens to Virginia lottery prizes that go unclaimed?
According to the Virginia Lottery law, unclaimed winnings must be added back to the prize pool to be used for subsequent drawings, game-specific bonuses, and other promotional strategies.
Can Virginia Lottery Winners Stay Anonymous?
As of 1st of July, 2019, if the prize is worth $10 million or more, West Virginia law permits winners to stay anonymous about their name, private details, and image. The winner database on wvlottery.com contains a list of all other winners who have been made public.
Is a mail-in claim possible for Virginia Lottery winnings?
Yes. You can submit a claim for any reward by mailing your ticket to West Virginia Lottery Claims, PO Box 2913, Charleston, WV 25330 (we recommend using certified or registered mail). Make sure to sign and write your mailing address on the back of the tickets. If the prize is $601 or more, you MUST send a copy of your social security card or your driver's license. It is also advisable to have a photocopy of your ticket.

Virginia Lottery tickets that are lost or stolen are not the responsibility of the West Virginia Lottery. On the back of any winning tickets, print your name exactly as it appears on your government-issued documentation, and sign it right away to protect yourself. It's crucial to keep in mind that West Virginia Lottery tickets are bearer instruments, meaning that anybody in possession of one may submit a claim unless the ticket is signed by the legitimate winner.
In the event that a Virginia Lottery jackpot winner passes away before receiving all of the prize money, what happens to the annual payouts?
The West Virginia Lottery will continue to make the annual payments as planned to the winner's trust, legal estate, or the person(s) specified in his or her will in the event of death. Both the state and the lottery DO NOT take the money. It is possible to file a lawsuit to have the remaining annuity's lump amount paid to the estate. The Lottery advises all jackpot winners to speak with a qualified financial counselor and attorney as soon as possible.
How old must I be to play the VA Lottery?
18 years and above. No one under the age of eighteen may purchase or redeem a ticket or share.
