About Montana (MT) Lottery

The Montana Lottery brings excitement to players while generating funds that benefit the state. Since its launch in 1987, the Lottery has grown to become an important source of revenue for Montana’s General Fund and the Montana STEM Scholarship Program—all funded entirely by ticket sales without using state tax dollars.

A Brief History

The Montana Lottery was created through a citizen referendum in 1986, passing in all 56 counties with overwhelming voter support. The first lottery ticket went on sale on June 24, 1987, setting a national record with 1.1 million tickets sold that day—an average of $1.28 spent per resident.

Initially offering a single scratch game called Pot of Gold, the Lottery quickly expanded. By FY2021, sales reached $112.6 million, a 417% increase from its first full year of operation—all while maintaining a lean staff size similar to that of 1987.

Games Offered:

The Montana Lottery offers a wide range of games to suit every type of player:

  • Montana Cash
  • Big Sky Bonus
  • Lucky for Life
  • Lotto America
  • Mega Millions
  • Powerball

The Lottery also operates Sports Bet Montana, the state’s exclusive sportsbook product.

Where the Money Goes

Proceeds from Montana Lottery sales contribute significantly to important state programs:

  • Since the 1990s, more than $361.3 million has gone to Montana’s General Fund to support public education, health, and safety initiatives.
  • About 45% of total revenue—over $1.06 billion—has been awarded as prizes to players.
  • The Montana STEM Scholarship Program receives $2.25 million annually, helping students pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, math, and healthcare fields.
  • Local retailers have earned over $104.5 million in commissions, supporting small businesses across Montana.

Looking Ahead

The Montana Lottery continues to focus on growth and innovation. With goals to streamline operations, enhance marketing strategies, support retail partners, and upgrade its gaming systems, the Lottery remains committed to delivering value to players and generating even greater impact for Montana communities.

Whether you’re checking the latest Montana Lottery results, exploring winning numbers, or playing your favorite games, every ticket helps contribute to Montana’s future.
